Hydration & Energy
It goes without saying, hydration and energy are always top of mind when setting out for any type of endurance sport. So, first things first, always have a water bladder or bottle with you on the trail. You will also want to keep something of substance handy. Coach Alana Gilmore says, “Salt on anything with a lot of fat and calories.”.

Extra Layers
Weather can be unpredictable and as we all know sh!t happens. Because of these two known truths, number two on this list had to be element protection related. Although you don’t want to go overboard, you certainly don’t want to be careless either.

Quick Fix
There are times on the trail when you or someone else just needs a quick fix. That little something to get them back to the trailhead or car. Whether you need to secure a cable or patch a line, you’ll always want at least one or both of these quick fixes in your pack.

Analog Navigation
Present-day athletes have come to rely heavily on technology, and for good reason. It allows us to dig deeper and go further. We use it to track miles, overcome plateaus, and keep us aligned with our goals. But, there will be times on the trail when you can and will find yourself off the grid. In this case, you don’t want to find yourself ill-prepared.

Illumination
Most often when setting out on the trail, you do so with every intention of making it back before sundown. But if you find yourself behind schedule, turned around, or just enjoying the views these last two recommendations are soo nice to have on hand.
